Nicki Minaj was probably the busiest person at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards last night aside from its host. In addition to opening the show and making public amends with Taylor Swift (for something that wasn’t really beef in the first place), she also won the award for Best Hip-Hop Video for “Anaconda.” While accepting the award from Rebel Wilson, the top rapper ended her speech by speaking directly to Miley Cyrus about her recent comments about Minaj in the New York Times.
This call-out moment brought skepticism from social media, even accusations that the entire moment was staged. However, MTV is now saying that Nicki dressing down Miley was 100 percent real and unplanned:
“It’s real, an MTV press spokesman confirmed to MTV News.
Like really, really real, you guys. As in not a stunt or a trick or a brilliant performance of award-show faux-beef.
We get the confusion. After all, MTV has had some fun in the past with staged stunts. Remember Brüno literally dropping in on Eminem at the ’09 MTV Movie Awards? But Sunday’s throwdown was no such stunt, as our reporters backstage and outside the dressing rooms can also confirm. So consider it official: the Nicki/Miley exchange was unscripted and real.”
Yes, it’s important to consider the source with a grain of salt, and also consider Kanye West’s speech about how MTV and the media cycle at large loves to promote and proliferate that kind of controversy. But, as far as what happened onstage, it seems like that was genuine. That is, until Nicki drops a surprise duet album with Miley and has us all fooled again. Just wait on it. On second thought — hopefully not. (via MTV)
