In the series premiere of the Vans’ OTW Minute web series, we get an up close and personal look at Cali emcee, Murs. In the short clip, Murs shares the sources of his inspiration, his humble beginnings as a teenager hustling his music hand-to-hand on the streets of LA to make rent, and a few choice words for some of his fellow artists.

Before closing the video out with a freestyle, Murs laments a genre that he believes has yet to grow up, highlighted by artists that write rhymes, but don’t read, and gangster rappers who are afraid to admit that they aren’t really gangsters. The west coast stalwart’s perspective is a refreshing example of criticism that is borne out of love.
