Earlier today, I received one of the best phone calls in a long while. You may or may not (probably more so the latter) remember me speaking on one of my best friends who has been locked down for the past six years. Well, today he officially walked from behind the confines of that correctional facility as a free man. To say he sounded happy would be a slap in the face – homie could barely contain his excitement. Hell, I think I was more amped than he was. It’s been a long time coming, to say the least.
Freedom is one of those unwritten privileges we often pass and take for granted. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just how life is. If you do something for long enough, it is bound to happen. For Mystikal, it’s all about moving forward and making his bid a thing of the past. “Set Me Free” is his first visual post-pen along with Young Goldie, otherwise known as Lloyd. The two walk through the streets and projects of New Orleans – along with a symphony in tact – celebrating the return of their long-lost son.
Unlike another rapper who recently got out the bing, Mystikal’s voice appears to be the same as we remembered it from the late ’90s and early 2000’s. And maybe it’s because I haven’t heard from the guy in years, but his verse on here is a clear indication he’s hitting the ground running.
