“Like Smoke” started off as the barest shell of an Amy Winehouse joint – a smooth, throwback bit of soul from Salaam Remi, a few oohs and aahs from the late singer, and a hook. No more, no less. But then, luckily for us, Nasir Jones came by to do what he does best.
Sure, theoretically, this is still Amy Winehouse’s track. It features her vocals, laid down back in 2008, and it’s set to be on her upcoming posthumous album. But really, it’s part of the run that Nas has been on over the past few months – another dope beat, another set of bars that leave me shaking my head in amazement. There are too many quotables on this one for me to pull one out for y’all, so take your pick.
I just wonder what Amy Winehouse’s crossover audience’ll think of this one – there’ll be more than a few middle-aged white guys bobbing their heads in the middle of Starbucks when Lioness: Hidden Treasures drops.
