The first new single from Bobby Womack in 20 years isn’t for everybody. Then again, when the man behind the wounded lyrics on “Please Forgive My Heart” has been publicly lamenting since the late ’60s, how could it be? I’m sure that most will glance right over this, but those with OG tastebuds will appreciate hearing Bobby’s classic raspiness renewed once again over contemporary production from The Blur’s Damon Albarn. The label responsible for putting the pieces together on this soulful resurgence is XL recordings, who also reintroduced Gil Scott-Heron a few years back in critically-acclaimed fashion.
If the rest of Womack’s The Bravest Man In The Universe album carries this same calloused rejuvenation, his versatility should indeed help usher in a new realm of appreciation for the 2009 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee.
