While the actual contributions of DJ Khaled in the creation of his music remain somewhat of a mystery, the end result never seems to waiver. Khaled is in the business of producing summer anthems–blockbuster collaborations with the gloss and sheen of a Michael Mann flick.
As if on cue, with winter just about in the rearview mirror (even on the east coast) and warm weather fast approaching, Khaled is set to make his move. With “Take It to the Head,” the new single from his forthcoming Kiss The Ring LP, Khaled’s mindset seems to be: if the formula ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So we get his frequent collaborators Rick Ross and Lil Wayne; plus an additional YMCMB rapper (Nicki Minaj); with an of-the-moment R&B star on hook duty (Chris Brown); and production team The Runners rounding out the record.
That this somewhat cookie-cutter method of hit-making hasn’t yet started to produce seriously diminishing returns is an accomplishment in and of itself. If not as good as last year’s “I’m On One,” “Take It to the Head” is plenty catchy in all its piano and synth heavy grandiosity, with Rick Ross coming out with the best showing on the mic (due as much to the mediocre performances of the two Young Money representatives as Ross’ own steady consistency).
Perhaps DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win!” catchphrase wasn’t as absurd as I thought. More than a half-decade into the game and Khaled has managed to become one of a handful of radio rap fixtures, despite the fact that he doesn’t seem to have much discernible talent outside of bringing high profile rappers together on songs. Only consummate winners can pull that kind of shit off.
