A few months ago, Dam-Funk’s drummer Jovan “J-1” Coleman died while on tour in Sweden. Sadly, I never caught a Master Blazter show while I was living in Los Angeles, but it was hard not to notice how deeply he was loved and respected throughout the Los Angeles music community for his work with Shafiq Husayn, HVW8 and Dam among others. Anyone on Twitter the night of his passing saw that J-1’s close friend DJ House Shoes took his death especially hard. It would have been J-1’s birthday this past Monday and Shoes just dropped a tribute song for the occasion, “Castles (The Sky Is Ours),” featuring the incredible vocal talents of Jimetta Rose.
“Castles” will be on Shoes’ upcoming album, but for now you can pick it up on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to J-1’s family. The cause should be enough, but on the off chance it isn’t, know you’re getting an beautiful, heartfelt track in exchange for your donation. If you’re in a position to do so, drop a couple bucks off, support good music and help the family of a fallen soldier.
