With a classic chopped and screwed and well placed sample from Bone Thugs N’ Harmony, Phil The Thrill harbors the same belief Flesh, Layzie, Eazy-E, Bizzy and Krayzie did nearly 20 years ago – money is still the motive. “FTL$” will ultimately settle on Phil’s forthcoming project, VAlien, dropping July 10. For the Virginia native, balance is key. There’s the 9-5. Then there’s the unwavering commitment to spawn his music into his career. And it’s all for the love of dead white men on green pieces of paper.
It’s nothing wrong with that either. Napolean from The Outlawz once famously asked Xzibit, “If you ain’t in this rap game for the motherf*cking cash, mane/Then what is your motherf*cking purpose?” Plus, if your talent is something people are willing to financially invest in, why do it for free? And contrary to popular claims, it is, indeed, possible to generate income off Hip-Hop without sacrificing your integrity.
Now that I’m off my soapbox though, allow me to make one more announcement. For those who happen to be in Richmond this weekend for whatever reason, like Chance Fischer, come check out Phil at Epic Fest.
