For the most part, I typically enjoy female singers on hooks. If done right, the added element of harmony can both broaden the soundscape and stick like resin inside listeners heads. However, when done wrong, the build-up to the chorus peaks with a let-down and repeat value is hard to come by.
Now, I’m not saying this is the case for Shawn Chrystopher’s “Engine Running,” but it’s borderline unfortunately. After a few spins, I’m still on the fence about whether or not Shawn’s casually cool bars and excellent beat selection can trump this mediocre mama belting out the lackluster lines about standing strong.
Since the bassline is so ridiculous, let’s just say two for three works for me.
