In case you forgot (or care, for that matter) British producer Jamie xx is a part of a band. There’s a reason he tacked the “xx” onto the end of his first name since he’s a part of the group The xx, which launched his career as a precocious musical talent. That band is back in the studio working on their sophomore LP and have released a titillating appetizer from the album’s early recordings, “Open Eyes.”
The track’s haunting hushes and sparse instrumentation allow singer Romy Croft to croon softly. Her voice calmly floats into some lugubrious abyss that evokes a beautiful sadness that The xx made their signature aesthetic on their debut. If “Open Eyes” makes the album’s final cut, listeners can expect a beefed-up version; however, the bare-bones original is a great starting point, deserving of hard drive space on any fan’s computer.
Although details on the group’s upcoming album are scarce, the “Open Eyes” demo is available for download here, courtesy of the group. The xx also provided some chilly visuals, just in case the song wasn’t dreary enough.
