It was apparent at a recent New York City Flying Lotus show that Thundercat’s name doesn’t deceive–he looks like a lost character from the popular 1980s cartoon. His bulky ensemble and tricked-out axe played well with his brand of psychedelic funk that he conjures from the period that preceded the famed show. As an integral signee on FlyLo’s Brainfeeder label, the man fits the mold of the DJ’s preferred aesthetic. In anticipation of Thunder’s upcoming debut, The Golden Age of the Apocalypse, Flying Lotus compiled a 30-minute “Shenanigans” mix of the artist’s spazz, jazz and space-aged ambiance.
Notable Flying Lotus tracks such as “Mmmhmm” appear, but lesser-known cuts also feature, allowing interested listeners the chance to familiarize before Golden Age of the Apocalypse’s August 30 drop. He’s not Lion-O and he ain’t Snarf. However, this is one 21st century Thundercat worth committing to memory.
