For as many head scratching moments as Nicki’s platinum debut Pink Friday may have had, respect is given where it is earned. Her reflective and humble collaboration with Drake, “Moment 4 Life,” was one of those tracks which immediately stood out on first listen back in November. The concept behind the record was interesting in the fact it had two of the game’s most successful new names basically “recognizing the moment” and also realizing life won’t always be as sweet as it is now. It was arguably Nicki’s most honest moment on the entire CD. And while his massive celebrity has become a glaring distraction to his honed craft which is the music, Drake proved why his penmanship is among the best living, keeping the focus on Nicki, not to intentionally outshine her “Moment.” (Although that Party of Five line was mean.)
The video does its best to bring that vision to life while also helping pour gasoline on a rumor Drake and Nicki get a kick out of perpetuating – whether or not they spend those lonely nights on tour cuddled up beside each other. Their lives are fairy tales and given the way Nicki carries herself, I have no doubt in my the first minute and a half of the video happens on a nightly basis. Moments of fame will not last for life, but this collaboration will.
