Nike Introduces The Treacherous Three Of Air Max 90s

Not even a full week into the new year, and Nike hits us over the head with an entire revamping of the Air Max 90 line marking 2014 as the year of the runner. With the Air Max 90 Sneakerboot as well as the Air Max 90 Tape dropping in 2013, the Swoosh has three more offerings for the first quarter: the Air Max Lunar90, the Air Max 90 Jacquard, and the Air Max 90 Ice.


Towards the end of last year, Nike released an iteration of the famed ‘Infrared’ colorway but with a Lunar sole and within hours they were sold out everywhere. Now there’s a full lineup of the Air Max Lunar90 that’s well done and stayed true to the original. There’s virtually no seams on the upper thanks to the use of tape, and the chain link stitching on the fabric’s upper adds a new look to the mesh of old.

The Lunarlon midsole is the most visually jarring element of the shoe, but it’s done tastefully and without looking too bulbous. And as an added bonus, anyone rocking these won’t have to worry about the inevitable cracking found on the previous models of Air Max 90s.


The Jacquard Air Max 90s utilizes just one piece of woven jacquard that allows for more freedom of movement. The forefoot of the sole gets the Nike Free treatment which is a plus for runners who would actually wear these to work out in. Yeah, weird right? The upper fabric definitely reminds us of Flyknit, and it definitely comes with the price to reflect that. DOH!


Rounding out the trio is the Air Max 90 Ice that release January 25th. To us, these do the best job of paying homage to the original. The standard midsole got nixed and replaced with a translucent rubberized sole to show off the Phylon cushioning and Air Max unit. The volt color adds plenty of pop to an already eye catching sole, and the translucent theme also lends itself to a partially see through Hyperfuse upper. A triangular pattern on the upper gives the shoe a futuristic camouflage feel. Just keep the Seaglow at the ready if you plan on wearing the hell out of them.

How well these treacherous three end up selling might affect Nike’s future plans of updating classic shoes, but regardless of the outcome, they’re a step in the right direction.
