After essentially being ousted by star center Dwight Howard in April, the question wasn’t if Stan Van Gundy would be fired but when his termination would occur. If you picked May 21st in your office prop bet pool, head over to the water cooler and collect your winnings. Not only did the Magic let go of Van Gundy, GM Otis Smith and the team agreed to part ways today. The organization announced the personnel moves in a statement on Monday.
“Orlando Magic Chief Executive Officer Alex Martins announced today that Stan Van Gundy has been relieved of his duties as head coach. In addition President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Otis Smith and the organization have mutually agreed to part ways.
“On behalf of the DeVos Family, we sincerely appreciate and thank Otis and Stan for all that they have done on and off the floor for the Orlando Magic,” said Martins. “These are the days you dread in this business, but we feel it’s time for new leadership and new voices.” [CBS]
With the firing of Van Gundy and Smith leaving, I have to say I hope Dwight Howard’s back heals well and quickly. Like it or not, the weight of the franchise is squarely on his shoulders alone now.
