The Cincinnati Bengals, for better or for worse, are a gambling sort of team. They’re extremely cheap, too, but they’re gamblers first and foremost. They’ll sign convicted felons and domestic abusers and journeyman NFL stars and red-headed Southern Californian GLORYBOYS (copyright: Big Daddy Drew) because they give absolutely zero f*cks along the Ohio River. But those second chances typically work in their favor, both on the field and off.
So they signed Adam “Pacman” Jones in 2010. And the 7th-year cornerback has remained relatively stable and, in lieu of his legal problems early in his career, quiet. However, Pacman turned himself in to Cincinnati Police yesterday after he was charged with misdemeanor assault after allegedly punching a woman at a bar on June 5. The incident reportedly occurred after she poured a drink on Jones.
Per NFL.com’s Greg Rosenthal, Pacman’s attorney, Peter Schaffer, confirmed with NFL.com’s Albert Breer that Pacman was turning himself in, but claimed the Bengal’s cornerback was only acting in self-defense.
The altercation occurred outside of a bar near Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark. Two drunk women supposedly were harassing Pacman and then wanted to take a picture with him. When he declined the photo request, a bottle flung by one of the women flew at Pacman, which then lead to his alleged punch.
ESPN 1530 out of Cincinnati, which spoke to Pacman yesterday about the charge, obtained security camera footage of the incident. Pacman went on to explain his actions to the station, citing the fact that “it was a just a quick reaction” and that “I’m not out drinking, getting drunk. All I was doing was protecting myself, man. I wouldn’t like to harm no woman, period.”
Deadspin reader OhCinCity added an interesting anecdote at the bottom of yesterday’s Dom Cosentino post about being at the bar during the incident. Scroll down to his comment in bottom about what allegedly happened when he also wanted to take a picture with Pacman.
Jones’ arraignment is set for this afternoon. View the alleged assault around the 1:55 mark in the video footage below.
