The Phillies have made something of a habit out of nabbing premium talent on the eve of MLB’s trade deadline (picking up Cliff Lee in ’09 and Roy Oswalt in ’10), and this year was no different as Philadelphia acquired All-Star right fielder Hunter Pence from the Houston Astros. Pence brings his insultingly ugly swing, Texas-tough work ethic and high batting average to a stacked Phillies team that, in all honesty, could have won a World Series without his help.
Hours before, news broke that another team in Philadelphia was just as busy making power moves, as the Eagles not only won the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes, but received top value for backup quarterback Kevin Kolb. And that’s on top of signing Vince Young to serve as Vick’s understudy. The whirlwind of transactions even has Jason Babin feeding into hype by tweeting, “I feel like we are the new Miami Heat of the NFL…except we win the final game.” A very productive 12 hour period for the City of Brotherly Love to be sure. If this were Boston, I’d be livid, but I just can’t bring myself to hate on Philadelphia. Between Allen Iverson, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the city’s rivalry with Pittsburgh, Philly has brought a lot of good to the table.
