Yo Dawg, I Heard You Like Nostalgia: 9 Reasons Why ‘Pimp My Ride’ Was Classic TV

Like most MTV shows, there was a certain suspension of disbelief that went into watching Pimp My Ride. If the decidedly non-PC title didn’t do the job, the absurdity of the mods definitely hammered home the show’s cartoonish exuberance. It was stupid, fun, wacky – a great way to waste 30 minutes.

And since it’s been 10 years since the first episode aired on March 4, 2004 and we let Xzibit take us into the zany world of custom car jobs, let’s take a look at some of the reasons we kept coming back. Because, let’s be real: we did keep coming back.

1. It introduced us to the custom car culture. Maybe it was common on the west coast, but for those of us who don’t call California home, the concept of putting absurd rims and candy paint jobs on seemingly normal cars would be completely foreign without Pimp My Ride.

2. The contestants’ cheesy backstories. Maybe one of them got their car broken into. Maybe they couldn’t find a better way to get their rear bumper to stick than duct tape and bungee cable. Whatever the case may be, these underdogs do their part to provide plenty of face-palming chuckles. They definitely weren’t boring.

3. The West Coast Customs crew. They really brought their A-game every single time. Especially Mad Mike, who has yet to explain what exactly has him so angry.

4. The song. That. Damn. Song. GET OUT OF OUR HEADS.

5. Xzibit’s persona. If it seems like Xzibit was a bit lifted during some of his segments, it’s not a coincidence. Per a Reddit AMA, PMR participant Justin, X wasn’t shy about his buddy.

ids1994: What was Xzibit like

ukulele_j: He’s a nice guy. Smells like weed.

ohsnapitsjoey: word. did you smoke with him?

ukulele_j: No, I don’t smoke. Just hookah. And cigarettes.

osnapitsjoey: did he at least offer??

ukulele_j: he did, actually.

6. The meme. It’s dated now and serious internet users will berate you for even considering dropping it mid-conversation in 2014, but the original YO DOG meme will always hold a special place in our hearts. When Martian school children study Earth culture in 2,500, their text books will include pictures of a cheesing Xzibit.

7. The bad cars… Head over to Wikipedia for a collection of modifications, and see exactly how useless some of these jobs proved. Since we’re all snarky assholes at heart, it’s just as fun to laugh at a car with a built-in coffee maker than it is to drool over a nice paint job.

Speaking of nice paint jobs…

8. … And the good ones. Nine times out of 10, the folks at WCC produced cool results.

9. The editing. At least once an episode there’s an absurd shot of the rapper/host strolling down the street towards the car owner’s house. Gritty rap plays, and X-to-the-Z gets filmed strutting towards the door from several different angles, sometimes in slow motion. Just another day in the life.
