“These aggins not half as nice, They ain’t even pay the price/ Now I’m getting ghost on ‘em feelin kinda Casper-like.”
Oh, those Chicagoans and their deep emotional messages. Rockie Fresh, hot off a dope performance on the TSS stage at A3C, gives us the first peek into his next mixtape, Otherside. “What’s the Hurry” has a bleak tone from jump as Fresh paints himself as the underdog with a chip on his shoulder. His narrative is sick, down to the mid-verse revelations about his own self-confidence. Fresh starts off basic and elevates his wordplay as the track progresses. The Cartoonz dropped a decent beat with some serious poundage, but it’s Fresh’s flow that gives the track legs.
While the song itself is dope, the video adds some raw emotion to it. Justin Oh must have been in one of those “I Am Legend” moods when he directed this one. Rarely have the streets of Chicago looked so hollow and lonely, and the Imogen Heap vocal sample adds a strange sadness to the whole package. With Fresh spitting at us without a crew or even a friend in the background, the whole thing feels like a one-on-one conversation, or maybe even a confession.
This is the first peek at the mixtape? At first glance, it’s definitely going to be a roller coaster. The Otherside drops December 14, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from Fresh as that day draws closer.
