In Photos: Ronnie Fieg x Asics “Leatherback” Release

Kith staff photographer Vagrant comes through with a nice selection of shots from Kith’s grand opening of their Manhattan location. To celebrate, Ronnie’s latest sneaker collaboration, the Asics Gel Lyte III “Leatherback”, was released and the street outside the shop was lined with waiting customers who camped out in anticipation.

If anyone’s wondering what the allure is or why RF’s releases have gained so much momentum over the past few years, the answer can be found in two words: quality and craftsmanship. I’ve said it before but Jeff Staple wrote similar thoughts in his latest Hypebeast blog entry.

“Everything he brings to the table is dope. And he’s not raping you. The boy is redefining what “value” means. In fact, he’s redefining the art of doing business in many ways. From the stock room to the board room. You need to get learned about this man. I respect his passion greatly. Every time I see I am reminded of why I got into this business. Yes…sometimes, I need reminding.”

Amen. Instead of capitalizing solely of hype, Ronnie ascribes to the old school work effort of a cobbler by selecting choice materials and overseeing the creation from its inception, which is something that’s just not seen as often with current releases. Plenty of brands and designers do uber-exclusive, big-name collaborations…that are still of shitty quality and not worth a 1/4 of the price (or pomp & circumstance) associated with them.
