It’s a good thing we’re beyond the days of the cassette tape. Don’t get me wrong, I love and sometimes miss tapes – the way they tick-tack rattle when you hold them, the way that quiet sssshhhh white noise makes them sound so rich – but do you know how many tapes I ruined back in the day?
Tapes got eaten, thin and stretched with constant playback. And I do play some joints back and back…and then, back again.
The other day, it was Devin the Dude’s “I-Hi.” I dropped the fam off at the airport and ran that track all the way home. I played it once while they were in the car, and was antsy the rest of the way because I just wanted to hear it again. You can’t do too much rewinding with other people around – it’s some weird, unspoken rule.
There’s something about “I-Hi” though that’s addictive – the horns at the beginning are so disgusting, and then that tough kick/snare drops in and gets your shoulders going. I defy anyone to sit still when that joint comes on.
The song you would think I’d be tired of at this point though, is Outkast’s “Aquemini” – but I’m not. Not in the slightest. I play that cut so much it’s nearly embarrassing. Andre’s second verse – after the beat cuts out and comes back – makes me do the ugly face, looking as hard as a knuckle. Aquemini is that quintessential driving album, and the title track will have the whole backseat forgetting they’re stuffed four deep in a Civic.
The only other song I really repeat like I forgot I just heard it is “T Plays It Cool” by Marvin Gaye off the Trouble Man soundtrack. That drum breakdown every four bars is stupid. Just dumb. It’s got this layer of funk so thick the stench is putrid. It’s like a genre unto itself – “Palpable Soul” perhaps. If there was ever a musician who made me want to take up the craft, it would have to be Marvin.
That’s why I’m glad we have CDs and MP3s now. Sure, you lose a little bit of that warm tone, but do you have any idea how much money I’d waste buying new copies of albums I already own?
I destroyed my SWV tape because of “Weak.”
Warren G doesn’t work because of “Regulators.”
Forget about it. Broken. Warbled.
