It’s safe to say that I wouldn’t love hip-hop as much as I do if not for RZA’s contributions. So it was incredibly tough watching him on Bloomberg last week saying that if Black men would “clean up” their dress, maybe they wouldn’t have to worry about being gunned down by cops. Especially when contrasted with Method Man’s thoughts on the same subject two years ago.
So when I heard that he clarified his statements, I thought I’d be getting the Rakeem that I grew up listening to. I figured that he’d attempt to give something more straightforward than the nuanced and surprisingly ignorant argument he gave to John Heilemann. Rather than take a step back and look at the fact that bullets don’t discriminate based on a shirt and tie, he doubled down. I’m not saying I expected him to say he’d punch cops in their heads with his pointy ass rings, but I didn’t expect this:
