After sharing a jubilant new track featuring The-Dream on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show earlier this week, British musician SBTRKT releases Save Yourself, his first new project since 2014’s Wonder Where We Land. Featuring frequent collaborator Sampha, singer-songwriter extraordinaire The-Dream, and hitmaker on the rise, D.R.A.M., Save Yourself is the result of almost a full year of writing and producing from SBTRKT.
SBTRKT goes into the details about his inspiration and thought process for this album on his website SAVEYOURSELF.TV. The whole entry is worth a read, but the final paragraph is especially interesting:
The title SAVE YOURSELF and the visuals reflect my personal mood on what’s happening in the world and society on a macro and micro level. Whether that be racism, xenophobia, the environment or irresponsible greedy politicians. All this while thinking about how incredible it will be when humans actually reach and settle on another planet. As an artist it feels strange to me to create simply happy music without being effected by current world affairs. Through the music too, I’m reflecting my constant state of nostalgia for the future. A dark optimism, for one that seems ever far reaching. So the title and artwork reflect this. Where we go next but also where we are now.
It’s good to hear that artists are allowing what’s actually going on in the world to inform their art. SBTRKT finds himself disturbed, yet somehow hopeful even with heinous acts being carried out close to home and abroad. In that regard, he’s no different than most of us. In the meantime, you can stream the album below or at his site, where it’s also up for download.
