Last year, a rumor began circulating online that Reebok would be discontinuing its basketball lines, and really nobody was worried. It had been a long time since a Reebok signature sneaker was a must-have in both sneakerhead and Hip-Hop culture.
Well, maybe that was the point, because Reebok recognized this and began to cater their line to these cultures with “more Retro inspired new products.” The Answers, the Kamikazes and the Shaqnosis were all retroed with great fanfare. Not only that, but with sponsorships for Rick Ross and Swizz Beatz Reebok has somehow become relevant and “cool” again.
Continuing with the theme of returning to its roots, Reebok takes Shaq back to his hometown of Newark, New Jersey aka “Brick City” in their new commercial. The ad features fellow Jersey native Redman with a pop-up appearance while Shaq narrates, reminding us that, “These streets didn’t break me, they made me.” I’m just happy that the days of Shaq making phone calls with his shoes are long gone.
The special ‘Brick City’ colorway of the Reebok Shaq Attaq that will be released Black Friday, November 29th.
