“New year, new me” is often heard each and every January as people seek the courage to change their daily existence. Smoke DZA can relate to that just like the masses as he’s decided to forge ahead on what he says will be a true independent path.
On Thursday, he released a statement declaring “This year is my year to be completely independent, through and through. To take ownership of my creations and destiny. To do it the way I want to do it.” To that end, he followed the message with a righteous track titled “Black Independence” featuring encouraging words from J. Ivy and production by 183rd. In it, Smoke does everything neccessary to take the first steps in breaking the current mold that casts him as a “weed rapper” by speaking powerful thoughts, far to many to quote here so the best advice is to listen and take notes. In ’14, sounds like we’ll be seeing a whole new side of DZA.
Smoke’s self-released album, Dream.ZONE.Achieve, will be out on April 1st.
