Every trip back down the Section’s memory lane elicits comments regarding coming here in the mid-2000s just to steal albums. For the record, those days are missed, but I love the present era way more because of the seismic shift that has occurred. Back then, we were the best bootleggers in the business but now we – you included – don’t have to steal. Every other day, artists are offering up their projects for full stream pre-release in exchange for fans holding up their end of the bargain. While the whole industry hasn’t grasped the concept, here on the underground the mood has a “Hamsterdam” setting where our drug of choice – music – gets traded without persecution and with an understanding between artists, labels and listeners.
Among the latest streams is Polo-obsessed Harlem rhyme spitter Smoke DZA giving up the goods on Rugby Thompson. DZA’s set to release the Harry Fraud-helmed project on Tuesday but the Kush God’s letting fans in early to hear what he created with featured artists Action Bronson, Curren$y, Sean Price, Domo Genesis, Schoolboy Q, A$AP Twelvyy and more. The game has shifted, however fans still have to step the plate. Who cares if you’ve already listened to the album, have it on your hard drive or phone, etc.? If you like it, buy it. Otherwise, the experiment gets deemed a failure and we go back to the aforementioned era. Truthfully, those times were fun…but I’m not big on going backwards in life.
