Because I’m the worst, I have not yet seen the Stones Throw Records documentary Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton that released in March (peep the trailer here); I almost feel like I might’ve sullied the experience by clicking play on the above video, which is 28 minutes of extra footage that didn’t make the documentary’s final cut.
But f*ck it. A man’s got to make inroads into watching a crucial documentary about one of Hip-Hop’s greatest independent record labels somehow. And what better way than with the B-roll, called “Extra Special Loving for the People,” which includes everything from founder Chris “Peanut Butter Wolf” Manak visiting his hometown of San Jose; Dam-Funk, Madlib and Wolf cutting it up about 45s; and Kanye West waxing poetic about J Dilla’s legacy.
They’re outtakes, but they’re well-culled by director and producer, Jeff Broadway. The other important things in life–work, kids, responsibilities, etc.–can wait. This needs watched now.
