It’s official, N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton is a smash, topping the box office in its opening week and bringing in $56.1 million dollars. The critically acclaimed film nearly doubled Universal’s $29 production budget in just its first weekend in theaters.
The film’s huge opening week is well beyond the $30 million the studio predicted and is a record opening for an R-rated film released in August. While some may have seen the big opening coming, it’s a shocker in that all of the film’s stars were relative unknowns and the biggest names attached were the roles they were portraying.
Naturally, a success this massive should open a few doors for similar films in the near future including hip-hop biopics in the same vein as well as films featuring all black casts. The buzz surrounding Compton was palatable, featuring everything from the movie’s stars hitting late night talk circuit to a new Dr. Dre album and a trending topic photo filter. It all paid off in the end, obviously, and now the Internet is wondering which hip-hop star will be the subject of the next inevitable biopic.
Master P is apparently going to be producing his own biopic independently, but it should only be a matter of time before Universal or another big name studio decides to capitalize on and duplicate Straight Outta Compton’s success.
