SZA’s records are some of the most unique songs I’ve heard in a long, long time. It’s definitely hard to place her music in a certain box or genre. I’ve been watching to see if the Hip-Hop community (especially online) would accept her unconventional style, and on the arrival of her inaugural EP, Z, it looks like the answer is a resounding yes.
The Larry Fisherman and Antydote produced “Warm Winds” is a great first track for anyone unfamiliar. It’s as slow as the rest of her catalog, but gripping and forceful, with equally strong visuals that seem to come out of left field, but interesting enough to make it difficult to tear your eyes from the screen. In short, SZA makes it known that her talents far exceed those of any old backup singer, and fall much more in line with those of an accomplished solo artist.
