Washington, D.C. is changing and the effects of gentrification, mass incarceration, and corporate greed are everywhere. Tarica June, like many D.C. natives, is trying to make sense of it all, and she shares her thought process in the new video for her 2014 track “But Anyway.”

Even in 2014, the days of D.C. being Chocolate City were becoming a faint memory. In the present day, June reminisces on the past and tries to reconcile the city she knew with her experiences in 2016. Utilizing the same familiar PM Dawn sample from “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss,” the third generation D.C. native packs a lot of emotion and substance into each verse, with the vibrant colors and people of D.C. echoing the sentiment visually in the self-directed video.

Even as she laments the the changes happening in her hometown, she still manages to strike a hopeful tone. June is determined to carve out a space of her own in the city, and she’s not going anywhere.
