This, ladies and gents, would be a proud, proud moment in Black history. This would be the reunited cast from the Cosby Show spinoff A Different World that helped pass time for idle minds on many a Thursday in the ’90s. Actually, that’s sort of downplaying its importance. We weren’t just watching it because we were bored; we looked forward to it. A Different World had the baddest women, the coolest guys and they all were gathered at the fictional HBCU Hillman College.
If you really stop and think about it, the show existed at the same time when the new Blaxploitation era of film and TV were style du jour, but we’re talking New Jack City crack epidemic and violence. ADW gave a lot of cats an out. You didn’t have to be thug to be cool. Dwayne Wayne made school cool and I bet a lot brothers who weren’t on the college track realized they could pursue a higher education if they wanted to. Personally, I think watching so many episodes of the show unconsciously influenced my decision to go to a HBCU.
The show’s producer-director Debbie Allen posted the pic with the message “Thank you Oprah Winfrey for bringing us together! Reunited and it feels so good!!!!! #ADifferentWorld”
You know what, let me throw in “!!!” of my own just because. Shoutout to you, too, Oprah, for putting it together. No Lena James or Kimberly Reese. And no Denise, but Bill Cosby couldn’t even keep her roped in half the time so no fault of yours their, O. You deserve rounds for your efforts. Because, there’s Whitley! There’s Dwayne Wayne! There’s Ron hiding in the cut.
But let me stop. My intent was to just share the picture but the spirit of nostalgia gets strong when we’re talking about cultural landmarks. Got caught in my feelings for a second but I’m good now. Initially, I was going to make a joke but Mensa’s comment that “2-1 odds Sinbad wearing a Bluetooth in his other ear” pretty much did me in.
