The 1992 Dream Team In Action (Figures)

Michael Jordan was found hanging out in my in-laws’ basement. With the NBA lockout and everyone involved having inordinate amounts of free time available, I’m sure stranger things have happened but finding the Bobcats owner chilling downstairs was unexpected to say the least. To be more accurate and truthful, what I found was Jordan, along with nine other members of 1992?s Dream Team, assembled as plastic toys still in an unopened box. While I’m not sure how many people remember Starting Lineup’s 1992 Dream Team action figures, men of a certain age will simply because the hubris surrounding sports greatest team ever gathered was all-encompassing. Putting all of these highly recognizable athletes on one squad was a marketer’s dream come true and the team members’ faces were plastered everywhere. T-shirts. Commercials. Magazines. You name an outlet, they were there. In fact, we even found the old McDonald’s collectible cups dedicated to each player.

One would think a 20-year-old set like this would be the equivalent of finding a small gold nugget but apparently it isn’t. Doing a quick eBay search reveals there’s one set going for original retail price, slashed from an original sale price of $100 and others auctions with opening bids as low as $20. I think one of the main players will have to die in order for the toys to increase in monetary value. Still, I’m happy with them and thinking of buying an unopened, loose set I saw just so I can set MJ, Barkley and Magic on my workstation or something.

Enjoy the pics included in the pages that follow. Sports marketing nostalgia at its finest.
