Back when I was casually growing my vinyl collection for no real reason, I bought a box of used records from a former friend who’d found them outside an evicted apartment. Although I felt bad about the way I’d gotten them, the exquisite selection I’d come up on for a measly $30 bucks was unfathomable. Aside from just the Slim Shady singles and old school LL Cool J 33s I’d acquired, the gem that sonically stood out the most was a seemingly-obscure copy of Danger Mouse’s remix to Audio Two’s classic “Top Billin'”. Clouded amidst the uprising of strings, vapid organ swipes and therapeutic baseline from his own “Air,” DM’s audible Advil has much more character than the bare-bones OG and twice as much class as 50’s much later “Got Money” swipe.
At least, that’s what I told myself when trying to forget the misfortune of a certain, homeless DJ.
