Hov’s “Blueprint²” is often a forgotten nugget in Hip-Hop folklore. By the time of its release, the squabble between Jay-Z and Nas had already passed its climax. Yet, the title track from Jigga’s 2002 follow up to 2001’s classic exposed a side not normally seen before or since, one who was hurt and embarrassed his stance in New York Hip-Hop was being questioned. Admittedly, “Super Ugly” showed hints of this side with the “condom on the baby seat line” ploy. Here, however, Jay seemingly lambasted anyone who held the belief Nas was the superior rapper.

“And y’all buy the shit, caught up in the hype
Cause the nigga wear a kufi, it don’t mean that he bright
Cause you don’t understand him, it don’t mean that he nice
It just means you don’t understand all the bullshit that he write
Is it “Oochie Wally Wally” or is it “One Mic”?
Is it “Black Girl Lost” or shorty owe you for ice?
I’ve been real all my life, they confuse it with conceit
Since I will not lose, they try to help him cheat
But I will not lose, for even in defeat
There’s a valuable lesson learned, so it evens it up for me…”

Bonus: If you have something to do within the next 10 minutes, hold off on starting this. The Internet comes through once again with extremely rare footage of Jay and Dame on the Reasonable Doubt tour in 1996. I wonder when’s the last time he even thought of this show.
