The Kid Daytona is unique. From his clothes, to his voice, to his flow, there is no one in the industry quite like the young Bronx representative. So, it’s no surprise that this video has something I’ve never seen before: seaplanes. As in planes that land on the water. While they are something I definitely know about, and have learned about in a half-forgotten, “I read about this once in third grade” kind of fashion, I’d never think of them as something that would appear in a Hip-Hop video.
But, in a way, the seaplane fits The Kid Daytona’s “On The Hill,” the first video released from his recent mixtape The Interlude. Both take something instantly recognizable, either the airplane or Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s The Main Ingredient, and change it enough that it’s distinctive, yet reminiscent of the original. The buttery-smooth beat created by 6th Sense provides ample room for the Kid to flex a little skill, and he does so admirably. Cameos from 9th Wonder and Aloe Blacc just add to the appeal of the already vivid video as well. With a pugnacious flow, and his own consistent rhythm, The Kid Daytona shows why he’s one of the up-and-comers who deserves to be in the discussion for the XXL Freshmen list.
