“…But the only thing they tellin’ you is no, You know that you deserve it but them curtains bout to close.”
In a sea of rappers, it’s hard to gain attention for your skills when everything but true talent is what garners the spotlight. Even more than music, the idea can apply to all arenas in life where those who may not deserve the promotion or acclaim receive it as a result of dumb luck, nepotism or outspoken behavior mistaken for intelligence. The sentiment brings us to TiRon’s “Down,” the first visual offering from MSTRD, directed by LA’s Calmatic. The track’s drowsy backdrop creates an airy space for the West Coaster to lay down a slow, serious dissertation lamenting his place in today’s rap universe. He has a point, one that will leave you realizing the reasons why that for every Waka that gains play on the airwaves, we could use more TiRon’s to balance the view.
