Trimming The Fat: New England Patriots Cut Albert Haynesworth

Albert Haynesworth, he of mammoth size, attitude and contract, was let go by the New England Patriots on Tuesday. For those keeping count, that’s two teams in one year for Haynesworth and only eight games with New England, a team that needed defensive line help…but not badly enough to deal with the oversized, often out of shape star. Coach Bill Belichick told ESPN it was simply time to move on.

“I’ll just say this on the Albert situation: I thought that both he and myself — speaking for the (coaching) staff — we really tried to make it work,” Belichick said. “He had a few physical limitations to overcome when he got here, but I thought he really tried to do what we asked him to do. We tried to work with him. In the end, it just didn’t work out. I think the best thing we could do was just move on.”

At this point, teams will have 24 hours to claim him and Haynesworth would be owed roughly $750,000 of his $1.5 million base salary if claimed off the waiver wire by Wednesday afternoon. Next season, he would have been due $7 million from the Patriots.
