ILoveMakonnen may be IceJJFish-ing me. There’s a part of me that says this innocent, chubby-faced cat singing about flipping packs and not giving a f*ck about his P.O. is an innocent joke. His voice’s more shaky the Tin Lizzy ride at the amusement park. He sounds like that kid in the youth choir they let lead a solo knowing damn well he can’t sing, but everybody humors since his mom is on the church’s usher board. Yet, there’s no denying how catchy his twanged, shrill vocals are. Trying not to mimic is futile.
On “H.O.M.E. (Hating On Me),” Makonnen partners up with Trinidad Jame$ and Sonny Digital and trio scores while dusting their detractors off their collective shoulders. Again, the kid stealing the show with his twangy singalong chorus (“All I wanna knooooo-ooow, is why they hatin’ on me”). It’s the kind of hook that will make you want to work harder to be successful just so you can get enough haters and sing “H.O.M.E.” with conviction.
