Two things caught stood out before even clicking play on Tyrique Shahmir’s “Perfection.” Per the press release:
1. Having been born in Utica, New York, and raised in Johnson City, Tennessee, he was described as being “heavily influenced by elements of both southern jazz and northern lyricism.”
2. His influences? Diverse as hell ranging from Louis Armstrong, to Nas to Curren$y.
Regardless, “Perfection” proved to be a quality listen off the strength of Shahmir’s ability to set the scene both harmonizing and rhyming. Monday morning is around the corner and before you know it, having to listen to random coworkers’ Independence Day stories how family members nearly burned their house down like Eddie Murphy’s is damn-near inevitable.
One thing’s for damn sure though. The Volunteer State quietly has one the most impressive rosters for talents on the rise. Sleeping Sleeping (on that fact, not actually sleeping) is for the lazy.
