100-Word Album Review: Usher’s “Looking 4 Myself”

Usher’s seventh album, Looking 4 Myself, boasts arguably the greatest number of good ideas he’s put to record since Confessions. Still not entirely comfortable with streamlined electro-pop, Usher nonetheless approaches the fist-pump anthems with unabashed zeal, giving his impressive vocal range much needed room to shine. Nothing quite matches the standard set by the pulsing 1-2 punch of falsetto-heavy first single “Climax” and “I Care for U,” but Looking 4 Myself dabbles in understated, floaty R&B (the 40-produced “What Happened To U?”), retro soul (“Twisted”), and downtempo bedroom romps (“Lessons for the Lover”) to considerable success as well.

Standout Songs: “Climax,” “I Care for U,” and “Euphoria”
