After first seeing the trailer for this during my freshman year in college in 2004, Pharrell and the powers that be decided to let loose of his short film Ecology Of Love. The YouTube description reads, “A stylish romance centering on a brokenhearted urbanite who, only after breaking down and getting stranded in the desert, unearths the resources to woo a French-speaking woman at a lonely motel.” Now, imagine my surprise finding out that French speaking woman was Dania Ramirez.
Maybe it was hearing her speak in a foreign language for the duration of the clip (words really don’t do that justice, by the way), but before realizing, the movie was over and it wasn’t half bad. And if you’re looking for added incentive to watch, about halfway through there’s The Neptune’s remix of Sade’s “By Your Side” to go along with “You Can’t Turn Me Away” by Sylvia Striplin.
Ultimately and expectactly, the majority of the praise/ridicule falls squarely on Skateboard P’s lap. Pharrell continues to push the boundaries of “moguls” in the music business and one of the few people I harbor tons of respect for both in and out of music. Not that he gives a damn, but still.
