Two things about this picture:

1. Greg Oden’s facial expression and Greg Oden’s shirt in the mugshot are all kinds of hilarious. It’s like he woke up in the morning to read a “come thru” text from a girl he’d been trying to get with for weeks. And do they sell those middle finger shirts at The Ohio State bookstore?

2. What Greg Oden did to earn said mugshot is anything but.

The 2007 No. 1 overall pick was taken into custody at 5 a.m. after being booked on a Class A misdemeanor for battery with injury and a Class B misdemeanor for battery. As if the Ray Rice debacle isn’t still fresh on everyone’s mind, Oden allegedly punched a female victim right in the kisser. The affidavit stated the young lady was “very uncooperative,” but “blood, swelling to the nose, lacerations to the forehead and nose area” were apparent upon officers’ arrival.

Per NBC Miami’s account, Oden and the victim dated for about two years, but had been broken up for roughly two months. Oden’s statement to police was, “Things got out of control and I started to go after the victim. My relative and witness tried to hold me back, but as I swung my arms to move them out of the way, then punched the victim in the face. I was wrong and I know what has to happen.”

Rehashing the melancholy timeline of Oden’s career is unnecessary. As Kevin Durant soars to higher and higher plateaus in his all-but-certain Hall of Fame career, the burden of disappointment will continue to loom more despondently on the former Ohio State standout’s broad shoulders.

The familiar story with Oden had always been his body never allowed him to showcase the talent that made him a freakish standout in high school and his lone season as a Buckeye. It was never truly his fault. His body never played fair.

Now the tables have turned. Already accepting responsibility is commendable – and truth be told, we don’t know what ignited the altercation – but now the latest pothole in his career is created by his own misjudgement. Of note and perhaps another misjudgement on Greg’s part, a relative at the house where the incident occurred stated “every time the two visit and go out, there is an argument to follow.”

Having negative energy mixed with a volatile situation like so in one’s life is bound to boil over at some point. A little K-Camp’n never hurt anybody and is best for all parties involved in some cases, specifically this one (if the facts are, indeed, valid).

Greg was said to have had a workout with the Clippers in the works, but it remains to be seen how this legal snafu affects taking a risk on an already walking poster-child for one of those “what-could-have-beens” the NBA is infamous for. Crazy to believe he doesn’t turn 27 until next January.
