Good times here as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the artist formerly known as The Fresh Prince, Will Smith, hit the stage at the Palms in Vegas to give the crowd a memorable moment by performing “Summertime.” And, just like that, it sounds like the ’90s all over again.
In fact, there should be some petition formed. “Summertime” is one of those timeless tracks, sort of like how “Rapper’s Delight” stands out as one of the songs from the early ’80s. Will and Jazz’s ode to short sets, barbeques and driving two miles per hour is as important to the ’90s as Public Enemy’s consciousness and N.W.A.’s gangsterism. For every kid who occupied the middle of those two extremes, there was “Summertime” as an ode to doing really regular sh*t and having fun. Years later, everything about the song has stood the test of time because who doesn’t want to have fun when the sun’s out? Exactly. The joint is a key theme song for the season. Has been and will continue to be for years to come.
Will’s decision to remove his shirt may seem strange to most but not to those of you who remember that one video with him and Gillie Da Kid. I mean, he doesn’t seem to be overheating or sweating so…yeah. The best I can figure is he has a thing with awkwardness these days. He’s also hella rich so sometimes coming back to rappin’ has to be like slummin’ for him.
