Young Thug’s ‘Barter 6’ First Week Sales Numbers Are In And They’re Pretty Low

By aligning himself with Birdman and naming his mixtape Barter 6 (stream it here), Young Thug has almost forced himself into the place of Lil Wayne’s successor. Except he has yet to sell records like Tunechi, and his first week sales for B6 will do nothing to aid that cause.

Thug’s first solo effort in two years brought in a paltry 18,714 sales plus streams, enough to land him at #21 on the Billboard 200 chart according to HitsDailyDouble.

There are a few caveats here that have to be taken into consideration. Thug had only a three-day sales window, little promotion beyond a few Instagram videos, no radio play, only two videos (“Check” and “Constantly Hatin”), no tour or official single. It was a halfhearted promotion by handled jointly by 300 and Atlantic, and, judging by their announcing the project the day of the release, it may have been that way purposely.

What probably happened is Thug was going to release this music one way or another, and much like Cash Money did for Drake’s If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late, the label stepped in and slapped a price tag on the project before he could give it away for free. It’s not a complete loss either since the mixtape album project costs $13.99 on iTunes, and there were 16,782 actual sales, we can estimate the label brought in about $235k.

So scrutinize the sales all you want, but bringing in nearly a quarter million bucks is never a bad week. Now, the suits can turn its attention to the real debut album, Hy!£UN35, in August, which is sure to feature a few singles, glossy label-funded videos and a full promotional cycle that will undoubtedly boost the sales numbers above the meager numbers B6 brought in this weekend.
