An 8-year-old boy recently married a 61-year old mother of five in a ritual ceremony in Tshwane, South Africa to appease the boy’s dead grandfather.
Sanele Masilela chose to marry Helen Shabangu, already a mother of five, in the ritual ceremony after the boy’s grandfather asked for him to be married before passing away. For fear of having a curse placed on her family if she did obey her father’s wishes, the boy’s mother, 46-year-old Patience Masilela, paid Helen £1,500 ($2,238 USD) to wed her son.
“Sanele is named after his grandfather, who was never had a white wedding before he died so asked Sanele to get married. He chose Helen because he loves her. By doing this we made the ancestors happy. If we hadn’t done what my son had asked then something bad would have happened in the family.”
Luckily for Sanele, his grandfather didn’t ask for the union to be legitimized. The couple did not sign a marriage certificate that would legally make them man and wife. Official or not, it’s still creepy.
