You mention Tom Browne’s “Funkin For Jamaica” to a bunch of heads my age and they’ll probably say they never heard of it. Then you play the record and it all comes together, whether or not they’ve previously heard the song. If not, then your audience in question isn’t made up of good people, simple and plain.
Tom Browne really held it down for Queens on this legendary jam. Plus the song takes you back to a different time or, in my case, lets you envision what life was like before you touched down. It’s often said NYC was a much rougher city when “Funkin For Jamaica” was fresh off the presses. At the same time the city sounded like a much funner place than today going by Browne’s signature single. Cue the trumpet!
Old videos are always better when they’re out of synch.
It’s been customary to add a bonus on these joints but, this time, I’ve had a tough time choosing between “Thigh Highs” and “Bye Gones.” So, following Gotty’s advice to just keep it simple, How about I link one (“Bye Gones”) and provide audio for the other? That sounds like a win-win situation to me.
