Biopics are like open bar weddings. Most claim they’ll happen, but more often than not rarely do. From the sounds of things, the future film documenting the life of Aaliyah appears to be all systems go with the main character already allegedly etched in stone.
Meet Zendaya Coleman, of Disney’s Shake It Up fame.
Set to air this fall, Lifetime’s Aaliyah: Princess of R&B will portray the singer from her discovery on Star Search to the tragic plane crash which took her life at only 22, ironically, only weeks before September 11.*
While Lifetime somehow overtook VH1 for production rights, the 17-year-old Coleman was tapped to play Aaliyah, edging out BET’s 106 & Park hostess, Keisha Chante, who was long-since believed to land the role. For those doing the math, Coleman was the seasoned old age of four when Aaliyah passed.
An official announcement is expected next week with filming set to kick off in the near future.
* – The movie will follow Christopher Farley’s best-selling biography Aaliyah: More Than A Woman.
