MIKE NOLAN WILL DRESS UP THIS FALL

THE ASTROS HAVE PROBLEMS

By / 06.14.07

The Astros blew a 3-2 lead in the 8th inning last night, as a 5-run outburst by the A's led to a 7-3 defeat for Houston.  'Stros reliever Dan Wheeler played the key role in the wheels coming off, blowing the save and getting yanked before finishing the inning.  Starter Chris Sampson, who went from "W" to "ND" with the blown save, attempted to console Wheeler in the dugout, and was promptly shoved for his efforts.  After the game, Wheeler was contrite:

"There's nothing going on," Wheeler said. "I love Chris. It was just frustration on my part. I'm a professional, I should be better than that. I take full responsibility."  Sampson said the outburst shouldn't be blown out of proportion.

…which means it's time to blow this out of proportion.  Wheeler's frustration is symbolic not only of the Astros' disappointing season, but something deeper, as well.  I'd say it's race.  That's what it usually is.  Dan Wheeler hates white people.  Yes, including himself.  The Astros clearly need more Hispanics on the team — you can really control those guys.

Other MLB scores:  Yankees win 8th in a row behind A-Rod's 25th homer, don't get headline from me out of spite and exhaustion… Brad Penny looked sharp as the Dodgers finished their sweep of the slumping Mets.  He looked metaphorically sharp, that is.  He actually looked bloated and sweaty… Jake Peavy (8-1) continued his badassery with 7 innings of scoreless, two-hit ball against Tampa Bay as the Padres won 9-0.  Rays starter Edwin Jackson fell to 0-8.  Elijah Dukes didn't play; perhaps he was on a couch somewhere?
