The Pittsburgh Pirates unconditionally released minor-league pitcher Olivo Astacio for a "significant violation of organization policy" on Thursday, and today we have the reason why:

The reason the Pirates released pitching prospect Olivo Astacio, two sources confirmed yesterday, was that he attacked another player with a bat earlier in the week during extended spring training in Bradenton, Fla. Astacio and the other player were having an argument, the sources said, and Astacio struck the player's leg with a swing of his bat. He swung again and missed before the incident was broken up.

Just like a pitcher to miss an easy target. I'm surprised bludgeoning is against Pirates team policy. I guess they prefer combatants to settle their arguments with cutlasses or black powder pistols. In a related story, I had a friend that was pummeled (or pumbled if you're form from Mississippi) by an amputee-stripper with her own peg leg for getting too "fresh". OK, it was me. -KD
