SLIM PICKIN’S FOR BREWERS, CUBS, ANGELS

By / 10.02.08

Phillies 3, Brewers 1 –Cole Hamels retired the first 14 batters he faced and allowed just two hits in eight shutout innings, while Chase Utley’s two-run double off Mike Cameron’s glove provided all the offense the Phils needed.  Brad Lidge managed to not crap his playoff pants too bad, allowing a run and escaping a ninth-inning jam for the save.  Game 2 is at 6:00 p.m. Eastern; CC Sabathia will make his fourth consecutive start on three days’ rest.  Dude’s gonna look like Dave Dravecky next season.

Dodgers 7, Cubs 2 — Cubs fans, remain calm.  Yes, Ryan Dempster was wild.  Yes, James Loney hit a grand slam, and Manny Ramirez and Russell Martin added salty-wound home runs.  No, the Cubs no longer have home-field advantage.  Wait, did I say “remain calm”?  Because you should definitely be panicking.  It’s pants-shitting time.  You really should know better than to entertain the notion of winning a World Series.

Red Sox 4, Angels 1 — Make it ten straight.  John Lackey only made one mistake last night, and Jason Bay sent it out of the park.  That’s all Jon Lester needed, as he struck out seven in seven innings before turning it over to the Sox bullpen.  The Angels have now lost ten postseason games in a row to Boston.  Where’s your rally monkey now, nyaaahhh?
