Peyton Manning Gets Franchise Tag

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was supposed to get a sweet free-agent deal this offseason, but that’s not happening while the NFL’s “labor” situation is in flux. Still, to see Colts owner Bob Irsay slap Pey-Pey with the franchise tag shouldn’t have been a surprise. But consider that the tag will essentially give Manning a one-year deal valued at $23 million, making him far and away the NFL’s highest-paid player.

The reason for the tag this year is its exclusive nature. By using such a designation, the Colts prevent Manning or his agent from talking with other teams. The Eagles used the same exclusive rights tag with Michael Vick. The tag also gives the Colts and Manning more options with the uncertainty of the new collective bargaining agreement. If the league reaches a new deal before the old CBA expires, expect the Colts to announce a multi-year extension shortly thereafter.

That’s a lotta dimp, but one would be hard-pressed to argue that Manning, arguably the most marketable player in the NFL today, isn’t worth it. The Colts have built that team (and, arguably, their new stadium) around Peyton. He’s like a living monument, which would also explain his utter lack of mobility in the pocket.
